Additional Info

  • Opportunity Title: Executive Director, Des Moines Community Playhouse
  • Organization-Sponsor: Des Moines Community Playhouse
  • Deadline: Until Filled
  • Location (if applicable): Des Moines, IA
  • Description of Opportunity:

With a rich history dating back to 1919, the Des Moines Community Playhouse (DMCP) is one of the oldest and largest continuously operating community theatres in the United States. Its mission is to change lives by entertaining, enriching, and engaging the local community through high quality theatrical presentations, meaningful volunteer experiences, and lifelong educational opportunities. Now in its ninety-seventh season and experiencing record-breaking ticket sales, DMCP runs one of the most extensive educational programs of any community theatre in the nation and has been recognized locally, nationally, and internationally by numerous awards including the “Better Together” award from the Community Foundation of Greater Des Moines and the Elinor Robson award from the Des Moines chapter of the Council for International Understanding.

DMCP is home to two auditoriums – the mainstage theatre, with a capacity of 399, and the Kate Goldman Children’s Theatre (KGCT), with a capacity of 233, together staging about two hundred performances per year. These are complemented by almost one hundred educational and community events throughout the year, ranging from summer theatre camps for K-12 students, a literacy program for disadvantaged youth, internship opportunities for college students, and interactive Friday Fundays, hosted by a puppet called Edgar Allan Crow, for children aged four through six

The Executive Director (ED) will be DMCP’s chief executive officer responsible for overall management of the organization as well as strategic business planning and institutional development. A newly created role within the DMCP organizational structure, the ED will assume some of the responsibilities of the outgoing managing director, retiring in early 2017, and all administrative management and governance functions of the current executive and artistic director, who will transition into a purely artistic role following the appointment of a successful candidate. The new ED will work in tandem with the longstanding artistic director, who will continue to oversee all DMCP artistic and theatre production activity until his retirement in 2019, at which time a new artistic director will be recruited. Reporting to the board of directors, the ED will be DMCP’s chief advocate and ambassador, instrumental in shaping the dialogue on the organization’s strategic development in response to the evolving model of community theatre.

Qualified applicants will have a bachelor’s degree, master’s degree preferred, and a minimum of seven to ten years of progressively responsible senior management experience in the performing arts sector. They will be creative entrepreneurs with strategic planning skills and a deep understanding of theatre production and management processes in a predominantly volunteer environment. Experience with capital campaigns in the cultural sector and working with nonprofit boards is highly desirable, as are excellent budgeting, people management, and communication skills.
