Their Dogs Came with Them
To support the theatrical production of Their Dogs Came With Them by Helena Maria Viramontes, adapted for the stage by Virginia Grise. Performances will be held at Perryville WomenÕs Prison in Goodyear, Arizona and Borderlands Theater in Tucson, Arizona. The lives of four Mexican-American protagonists, intersect and intertwine, as stories are revealed about the effects and aftereffects of the Vietnam War, homelessness, mental illness, gang life and state violence. Viramontes ascribes new meanings to gang life dramas, gender queer identities, and Chicana/o coming of age barrio tales. I am applying for a mentorship grant together with theatre artist Manny Rivera.
